Who The Hell Do Those London Dragons Think They Are

Last week when I was out on one of my marathon walks along the River Thames, I suddenly got the feeling that something was staring at me. I turned around and what caught my eye, but  a fierce looking Dragon. Not a real dragon of course, but were  dragons ever anything other than imaginary and mystical creatures that never really existed anyway.

I had in the past read a wee bit about the so called London City Boundary Dragons. Dragons have for hundreds of years guarded many of the main entrances to the City of London. But this was the first time I had actually paid any attention to them, and a fascinating and interesting sight they are too.

This pair of boundary dragons that I had the pleasure of meeting were situated on the Victoria Embankment. They sure made a striking picture standing on top of their plinths, with upswept wings, arrowhead tongues, clutching shields bearing the red cross of St George and the sword of St Paul. I suppose many people walk past these dragons every day and don’t realise the significance attached to them.

I don’t know where all the boundary are located in the City of London, but I know they can be found at the south end of London Bridge and Blackfriars Bridge. I will have to consult with the master of the Universe one of these days to find out where the others can be found.

As anybody that reads London Is Cool on a regular basis will now have a wee bit of knowledge about London and you will be aware that London is made up of two cities, the City of London and the City of Westminster. Both of which, along with 31 other boroughs’ from Greater London, (Westminster is a borough and the City of London isn’t).The City of London is also known as the Square Mile, because it is just over one square mile in area. It is actually the richest square mile in the world.

When I was on my walk along the River Thames I I was so busy enjoying the view of the Thames that I almost missed the Victoria Embankment Dragons, but I suppose that is London for you. I think I quite literally need eyes in the back of my head to take in all the amazing sights I come across in London on a daily basis.
