The Tower Bridge London Fan Club
Any tourist that comes to London, one of those must visit places is Tower Brigde, even though plenty of Americans think it is Londen Bridge they are looking for. But as most of us know and any Yanks that read my blog London Is Cool, you will be aware it is the Tower Bridge that you are looking for.
A sight that I witnessed for the first time a couple of weeks ago, was Tower Bridge lifting. It sure was an amazing sight, even though it was difficult to get a good view because of all the crowds of people who were lingering around beside the Tower of London.
For the benefit of those that don’t know and especially the many confused American tourists that come to London. Tower of London and Tower Bridge are not the same, they are two entirely different places. I know it is getting confusing for the Americans again, it sometimes gets a bit confusing for me too!
I was wondering WTF was going on, people were pushing to get a better view, old people were just about having street fights to get a better view of Tower Bridge opening. It was a bit of a frenzy there was a definite buzz in the air. The surge of people rushing to get a better view was almost like the frenzy I experienced at a Motorhead concert at the Aberdeen Capital when I was a youth in the 1980’s.
I was amazed at the excitement caused by Tower Bridge opening, it got too much when adults were pushing there own kids out of the way so they could get a better view. It was like it was a once in a life time experience. I suppose for some of them it probably was.
For me the sight of the 1940’s paddle steamer the Waverly coming through Tower Bridge was almost as equally as impressive as watching the most famous bridge in the world opening. One thing I know for sure is that next year I’m going to have to organise a trip on the Waverly.
Nowadays Tower Bridge doesn’t open too often, but if you are in London for a few days there is a good chance you will get an opportunity to see it for yourself. The best way to find out the Tower Bridge lift times, is to visit the official Tower Bridge web site.
I eventually managed to get front row view of the Tower Bridge lifting, you know what speed tourists are like in London. They haven’t got more than a few spare minutes to spend on each part of there itinerary before they go dashing off again.
My plan was to head over to the South Bank and get a good position for some snaps of the Old Steam Ship coming through Tower Bridge again. But just as I got on to the bridge it started to rise again. As is always the case in London, when your in a rush to get some place, something will always turn up to slow you down even more!
Ps. I have made a couple of deliberate spelling mistakes for the benefit of my American readers that cannot spell, so they can find this article via Google – “Brigde & Londen”…..

Hmmm, I wonder if my husband was on that boat? He went on a cruise the other day and they opened up the bridge for them.
Hmm, Its really funny when people refer Tower Bridge – as the London Bridge. Have you heard of the story about the bridge that an American bought because he thought he was buying the London Bridge?
I agree
