The Circus Is Coming To Town

The Circus Is Coming To Town

It has been a long, long, long time since I have been to the circus. In fact  I was just a young loon the last time I experienced the magic and excitement of a show in the big top was  way back in the 1970′s,  at the Links in Aberdeen. I cant really be that old, let me change that to the 1980′s now I feel a little bit less old.

My long sabbatical from going to the circus is about to change on Monday the 5th of April when I will be going to see the legendary Zippos Circus performing at Blackheath in London. I don’t really know what to expect from a modern circus act, but from what I have heard it is whole new ball game compared to the old days and just as much fun if not more so.

Circuses have maybe changed since the last time I was at one and there are maybe no wild animals, such as the lions and elephants nowadays, which was a welcome step forward in my opinion. Anyway I see enough wild animals roaming around the streets of London. One thing that is thankfully still there is the excitement and buzz  that I feel about going to see the various acts performing.

Zippos Circus and their production for 2010 is called “Encore” , which according to the press release, is a show  based on following the fortunes of the downtrodden Fips, who longs to join the circus, (I remember those day all so well). During the show there will some thrilling acts including the Wheel of Death, hire wire walking and Chinese acrobats and of course no circus show would be complete without the clowns.

I wonder if it is too late to runaway and join the circus, my African Princess seem to think I would be a  good clown….

  1. Very sorry to hear you’re going to this circus. There are no wild animals here, as you say, and I’m delighted you think that’s a good thing. But do you really think domestic animals fare much better? The travel regime, the lack of proper ‘horse-style exercise’, the environment and the performance itself (training is a dangerous one – I won’t go there). Is the circus really an appropriate place for a horse? I hope you reconsider but, if you don’t, please look carefully at them in the ring showing the whites of their eyes and not looking at all comfortable (the last ‘show’ I saw about 10 years ago – NEVER again!)

  2. I can appreciate your concern for horses and your personal point of view. I personally feel that circus life for horses is the complete opposite of what you say. I think they get plenty of exercise and stimulation being part of a circus, much more than they would stuck in field munching on grass all day long.

I especially look forward to seeing those well trained and looked after horses performing at the circus and ask you to reconsider your opinion and get yourself along to see the amazing act for yourself. From what I have heard it shows horses to the best of their abilities….

  3. As I said, I’ve seen it and the horses (though very beautiful) looked terrified. I’ll give my hard-earned money to someone else thanks.
