Steel Band Championship Notting Hill Carnival Pictures

I had so much fun at the 2010 Notting Hill Carnival UK Panorama Steel Band Competition last night, that I couldn’t not share some more of my pictures with the world. It just wouldn’t have been fair not too!

The true winners last night were the thousands that turned up to watch the country’s finest Steel Bands playing those ever so sweet sounds and rhythms of the Caribbean. When I hear those pan’s blasting out into the air, it instantly gets me back into the Caribbean vibe and I feel my hand reaching for a Pina Colada.

I truly find it amazing that such wondrous music can be made from an instrument that was originally a 55 gallon steel drum. My mind  boggles thinking about it…so I better not just in case I get a headache!

The Steelpans originated in Trinidad in 1946 when Ellie Manette, who is accredited with founding and developing the instrument first discovered the amazing sounds that could be made from them. Ellie was only a young boy when he was playing around with a discarded oil drum, and he noticed the different sounds that could be made from striking it in different places…and the rest is history as they say…

When I’m at the Notting Hill Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday, the sweet sounds of those Steelpans is what I’m going to be listening out for. Meantime enjoy some of the pictures I took at Panorama 2010 UK Steel Band Championships…
