Sleepless In London
Sleepless In London, it almost sounds like the title to another boring Tom Hanks movie. Sleepless in Seattle really would put me to sleep, it is that predictable and boring. However it is something equally as boring, if not more so. It is me struggling to get a decent nights sleep in the Big Smoke.
Now that I’m 39 years old again I have decided to get back into top shape again. It wasn’t that long ago that I was as fit as a butchers dog, as the saying goes.
My plan is to fight father time and turn the clock back and get into seriously good shape. I’m now exercising on a regular basis. I have started doing a lot of walking, calisthenics and I’m eating a much healthier diet. After only 4 short weeks I’m feeling fitter and looking good.
In order to get myself fit and healthy again I’m even starting to take my own advice that I use to freely give out to clients back in the days when I was involved in the word of health and fitness. I might be getting a wee bit wiser as I get older after all. Dam that has taken such a long time.
One of my biggest lifelong problems has been lack of sleep, I have never been a good sleeper. Things haven’t really changed now and at times it really is Sleepless In London for me. It is an issue that I really need to address if I want to truly get fit and healthy.
Lack of sleep really is bad for you. It has been proven by all those mad scientists that lack of sleep is bad for, not only our bodies but for our brains as well. We need to get adequate rest and sleep to function at our best. I know from personal experience that when I get a good quality 8 hours of sleep I feel ready to take on the world when I wake up in the morning. I just have to start getting it on a more regular basis and I will become an unstoppable force.
It is possible to train ourselves to start getting a good quality 8 hours sleep every night, instead of too little or erratic sleep. From a personal point of view I guess I was just too lazy to put the little bit of effort into developing a good sleeping pattern. I suppose I didn’t fully appreciate how much of a negative impact a lack of sleep had on my health.
I remember back in the day when I was studying and we were doing a course on relaxation techniques, which were ideal for those that had problems getting to sleep.
The lecturer giving us the course was lets just say, she didn’t have a clue how to teach, she was useless. You basically had to teach yourself by buying every book you could on her subjects. I’m quite sure anybody that has ever studied has came across a lecturer like this in there time.
The whole class is lying on the gym floor, learning these relaxation techniques that would help send you too sleep, from a woman that looked liked she got 3 hours of sleep a night on a good night. Some of us were doing our best to curtail our laughter because it was so dam funny. However after about 10 minutes I was fighting myself to stay awake, in fact half the class fell asleep. It was powerful stuff.
Looking back I wish I recorded one of her normal lectures because if I played that before I went to bed, I would be sleeping like a baby in a few seconds. On seconds thoughts it is not such a good idea, that could give me some crazy nightmares.
Being sleepless in London is something that I have to work on, and from what I can gather, not getting a proper amount good quality sleep effects a lot of people out there. The relaxation technique I learned all those years ago and which I should have put into good use, was called the Progressive Relaxation technique.
I used the Progressive Relaxation technique last night. I was having one of those nights, when I just couldn’t get to sleep. I was feeling tired, but my mind was too active. I made up my own Progressive Relaxation CD a few weeks ago, with some soothing music and my own not so soothing voice with the instructions to follow. I will tell you this it had me sleeping like a baby after about 10 minutes.
It looks like being sleepless in London is a thing of the past for me, that is unless I don’t want to be sleepless in London. The great thing about the Progressive Relaxation technique is that it really is a simple system that really does work. Do your research and I can imagine that you could probably find your own free recording online.
