Ship In A Bottle At Trafalgar Square

Ship In A Bottle At Trafalgar Square

Nelsons Ship In A Bottle by the Anglo-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare is the latest piece of art to sit proudly on top of the Fourth Plinth. And it is a huge and an impressive sight…it is 3.25 metres high, 5 metres long and weighs 4 tons. Its the biggest ship in a bottle I have ever clapped my eyes on.

I had heard so much about this huge ship in a bottle that was sitting on the Fourth Plinth and eventually I got the chance to check it out for myself the other day. And I must admit I liked what I saw. It sure is an intriguing sight. At last the powers to be have had the vision to allow something truly creative to appear here.

Looking up at Nelsons Ship In A Bottle I cast my mind back all those years ago to  when I was an 8 year old kid and I threw my message in a bottle into the North Sea from Aberdeen beach. Is it still floating around in the sea, did anybody ever find it. I waited for years to get a reply…and none ever came.

As you can imagine and would expect this ship in a bottle is much more than just a plain old big bottle with a ship stuck inside it, Nelsons Ship In A Bottle has some meaning behind it, which is explained better than I will ever be able to do at the Fourth Plinth web page.

Yinka Shonibare says his piece will reflect the story of multiculturalism in London and you know something I think get the picture…
