Sherlock Holmes 221B Baker Street

Sherlock Holmes 221B Baker Street

Sherlock Holmes has been reborn in the 21st century courtesy of BBC1. Last night I watched a fairly new series simply called ‘Sherlock‘ and I was hugely impressed by it. After watching just one episode I feel it could go onto to become a classic.

Sherlock Holmes the fictional detective who resided at 221B Baker Street in London was of course the creation of Scottish author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It is amazing to think that the first Sherlock Holmes short story was printed in 1887 and here we are in 2010 and the character is still going strong.

I don’t have a television, which is just the way I like it. I however do watch catch up TV online from time to time. And last night whilst chilling out I read the blurb for the new Sherlock series, which first aired a few weeks ago, describing it as a modern day version of the famous story. I thought this is going to go one of two ways, it is going to be totally bull shit or it will be pretty dam good – and pretty dam good it is.

Sherlock was created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, who have both written stuff for Dr Who amongst many other shows. And the main stars of the show, Benedict Cumberbatch who plays Sherlock Holmes, Martin Freeman who is Dr Watson and Una Stubbs who is their landlady, as well as Rupert Graves who is  DI Lestrade -  really do all gel fantastically well together.

Who would have ever thought that they could have updated the Sherlock Holmes story to modern day London and make it work so brilliantly well. If the team behind it, keep on coming up with good stories I don’t see why this show couldn’t go on and become a real classic. It is good to see the BBC coming out with some proper TV shows, I thought they had forgotten how to make these!

I’m bit disappointed that there are only 3 episodes to watch, but the good news is that a new series has been commissioned, so Sherlock will be back sometime in the  future. Sherlock really is a good  show, which almost makes me wish I had a televison…almost!

  2. I love the way that they’ve used old Gypsy music and locations that wouldn’t have been out of place in a 19th century Sherlock Holmes tale to give it an old/new feel. I thought it was wonderful, and I hope it comes back!
