A Blog About LIfe In London

SEO and London Blogs

London Is Cool as you can see is very obviously a blog. I’m based in London and my personal ramblings are mainly about my adventures and experiences in this amazing city. So the other day for some unknown reason I wondered how well I was ranking on the master of the universe Google for the highest volume keywords relating to London and blogs.

I wanted to see where I placed considering I have barely put any effort into ranking high for any keywords, let alone those. I wanted to see how well Google placed one of the best London blogs out there in the blogosphere. (there is nothing quite like being modest) Would my finger get tired from clicking my mouse as I thumbed through countless pages searching eagerly for London Is Cool to appear or would I be high up in the rankings.

For those of you that are not quite sure what SEO actually is well it stands for Search Engine Optimization. SEO is seemingly the process of improving volume or quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via natural or unpaid search results. Thank you Wikipedia!

The highest volume keywords on Google were “London Blog”, which had a monthly global search volume of around 22,200. My finger was getting cramp that s how long it took me to find London Is Cool. I eventually found myself languishing and lost on page 6. I went back and checked again, I thought this must be a fucking mistake.

Unfortunately it wasn’t. There I was stuck on page 6 of Google for the search term London Blog. It was a direct link to my blogs homepage. I was intrigued as to what blogs came before me.

Sitting at the top mountain was London Underground Tube Blog. My immediate reaction was WTF a blog about something as mindless and annoying as the London Underground, this cant be true. However after reading some of the articles I must admit I rather like it and I  will add this one to my must read list. Number two was the Londonist, a blog  about news and events, restaurants and bars, happenings and goings-on in London, again a blog well worth reading.

Further down the first page was another blog that  I couldn’t not have a wee read of, which  was the London Cyclist Blog. And just as I expected it was a blog written by a can only see my own opinion and up my own ass cyclist. Keep those dam cyclists off the  pavements!

Most of the rest of the blogs on the 1st page of Google for the keywords London Blog, were a bit of bore if you ask me. On page 2 of the results and near the top was Rachel from North London. She is obviously an ex London Blogger because she hasnt posted an article since, Sunday, August 02, 2009. The next one I clicked on was called I Knit London, all I got to say about that one is WTF.

The next most popular keywords that interested me on Google were “London Blogs”, which received traffic volume of a mere 3,600 last month. I hoped I would be  where I belonged for this search term, which is of course on the 1st page. I was overwhelmed with excitement, when I looked at the first listing, only joking I wasn’t really. It was of course not London Is Cool. It was a site I recently joined called London Bloggers, which is a directory of weblogs written by people who live or work in London. Number 2 was once again the London Underground Tube Blog.

It was the usual suspects before me, but hell I couldn’t even find me. I was clicking like a mad man, my finger was getting cramp from all the exercise. A blog on page 6 caught my eye, called Belle De Jour, which was about some tart that became famous for  selling her body for money. Looking at her picture I find it fucking amazing that guys paid her a lot of money to fuck her. Its a crazy world. I have seen better looking $20 dollar  whores walking the streets in Barbados than this girl and who I imagine would have given you an even better time.

I got to page 10 and I gave up searching for me. London Is Cool is obviously not worthy of ranking for the keywords London Blogs. Another blog caught my eye called Naive London Girl. It was another sex blog about some American woman living in London, that likes sex, don’t we all? However I read a few of the her most recent  articles  and there wasn’t too much sex going on. Maybe she is having a wee break or recharging her batteries or something.

I need to go and learn some SEO techniques because I feel I owe it to myself and my blog to be ranked higher than some of the crap that is out there. My aim for this year is to get onto the first page of Google for the keywords London Blog and London Blogs. All I have to do is figure out how all this SEO stuff works.

However I noticed that I recenlty made the first page on Google for the term ‘London Blog’, which is where I guess I should be. Over the coming months and weeks I will be getting more into this SEO lark…
