Rising Sun, 38 Cloth Fair, Smithfield
The Rising Sun pub which is located at 38 Cloth Fair in Smithfield is my kinda pub. It is old, rough around the edges, has plenty of character and it sells cheap ale. The only thing that would make the place better is if there was a juke box which had music chosen by be, but Sam Smith pubs have a no music policy. Which is fair enough…I suppose!
Monday was the day of my Monopoly Quest and I must have walked close to 25 miles by the time I reached the Rising sun. I had walked from Old Kent Road to Whitechapel Road, followed by walking to Brick Lane then I finished up at the London Museum which is a real gem of place to visit. My poor little legs were shot by the time I bought myself a nicely chilled pint of lager and sat myself down on a chair in one of my favourite London boozers. There is a downstairs bar, and an upstairs lounge which is slightly more comfortable but it only opens when they can be bothered!

I overheard a woman asking the barmaid if they did food, but was told they never offered food on a Monday. The woman asked if it would be okay to go and buy a sandwich and take it back and eat it at the table. Like those brainwashed twats who are going to vote for Boris Johnson in next years Mayors Election, the bar girl very…very, quickly said no! WTF, is the problem with some bars, some barmaids? They don’t sell food, which is frozen anyway and they have a problem because somebody wants to eat a sandwich, the woman should have quite simply said ‘fuck you’ and left with her three friends and went some place that values custom! Anyway that’s just my humble opinion!
A Monday evening must be a good time to visit a bar that is like taking a real step back in time, as there was only about 15 customers. As soon as you walk into 38 Cloth Fair there is a real olde wordle feel about the place, which I find comforting and appreciate. I’m not a dinosaur and when the mood suits me I don’t mind going to shiny trendy bars, where the barmaids are chosen for their looks and not their ability to pull pints or their command of the English language!

There was a real mix of people in the bar, which is the kinda bars I like. There were a few suits, some locals, a couple of pensioners who had saved up their coins for a few beers and a table with two guys and two girls planning their show for this years Edinburgh Festival. Since there wasn’t any music I had to listen to something…
Did I mention the fact that the booze is real cheap in the Rising Sun? I had two pints of Alpine Lager and two pints of Stout, which was rather tasty and I had change from a tenner. Now that is excellent value for money! Needless to say I will be back again and again…

I agree with you about the woman who was hungry. Allowing her to bring food would probably cause her to order more since she would get thirsty from what she was eating. Just my opinion.
