Regents Canal Under The Moonlight Walk

Regents Canal Under The Moonlight Walk

I had just watched a beautiful sunset in not so posh Kilburn and further along the road in ever so posh St John’s Wood. You don’t need to live in a fancy house or to drive a top of the range car to enjoy watching the sunset…it is for everyone poor or rich to enjoy. Anyway…anyway, I just carried on walking until I reached the Regent’s Canal. It was dark by the time I started walking along the towpath…very dark!

My plan was to walk along the canal to Camden and go for a well earned pint or three…hey I deserved it! However by the time I reached Macclesfield Bridge I decided to curtail my adventure. I aint scared of the dark…honest!

As I walked past Macclesfield Bridge or if you prefer ‘Blow Up Bridge’ it was pitch dark and I really do mean pitch dark. A guy sitting on the bench smoking a cigarette almost made me jump out of my skin, and a huge German Shepherd peering at me through a fence did make me jump out of my skin…WTF. I thought it was an American Werewolf in London! The full moon was shining bright. A moment later when a barge appeared slowly motoring along the canal almost blinded me with its bright light, I decided to head back the way I came and find a pub in Maida Vale for a few beverages!

A wee piece of history for you regarding ‘Blow Up Bridge’. At around 3am on the 2nd of October 1874 a barge carrying gunpowder blew up right under the bridge, destroying the bridge and killing the 3 crewmen. The Macclesfield Bridge was eventually rebuilt, and in the process the dozy builders put the impressive Doric columns back the wrong way round.

My Saturday afternoon adventure had begun by watching a beautiful sunset lighting up the London skyline in Kilburn and ended by watching a beautiful full moon down by the Regent’s Canal. Well almost ended…I did end up in a pub.

I just love these early dark nights. I had started watching what was a truly…truly stunning sunset starting to engulf the sky at around 3.45pm and by 5pm I was watching a beautiful full moon reflecting on the canal. Don’t be afraid of these early dark nights, embrace them and enjoy them…
