Regent’s Canal Has Turned Into A Swamp – Wordless Wednesday
There I was standing on top of an old bridge which crosses over the Regent’s Canal, enjoying the view, when a couple of guys in a canoe appeared. I watched them slowly paddling their way through the green algae that has invaded large stretches of the canal – I was half expecting a huge monster to rise from the depths of the canal and attack them.
I almost felt like I was watching something on the Discovery Channel – adventurers making there way through a wild river deep in the depths of the Amazonian rain forest. The vibrant green algae had my imagination running wild … was I really still in London. Where had the algae come from, why was there so much of it?
The Regent’s Canal looks like it has turned into a swamp, especially so on the parts where the trees and plants along the side hang over the water. It is there anything lurking under the water, apart from fish that’s what I want to know, and did those adventurers make it safely to their journeys end…

Every year the algae seems to be getting worse. Almost looks like a green carpet on certain parts of the canal.
I noticed this the other day. Don’t think I’ve seen that here before

Great shot! Too much algae can’t be good. Kind of sad for whatever lives in that canal? Unless they like algae.

Happy WW! Have a nice day!
This year is by far the worst I have seen it. I’m sure it isn’t good for the canal.
It is sad to see the canal in such condition. the fish and aquatic plants will probably suffocate and die. great photos.

Tracey, I can’t even remember seeing any last year, well nothing like this.
Mo, same here. It seems to be everywhere along the canal at the moment.
Carol, it definitely doesn’t do the wild life any good. It is a major problem.
Carmen, I wouldn’t mind enjoying a wee bit of canoeing it does look relaxing on the canal.
Kim, there were stretches of the canal that were covered in a lot more algae in what you can see in these pics.
LifeRamblings, the algae is a major problem, that’s for sure.
Steve, it does look amazing. Parts of the canal actually looked like a thick green carpet. It looked slightly unreal…
Doesn’t look very appealing to me. I’m sure it will continue to multiply until you can no long traverse this waterway. Too bad too.
Have a terrific day.

Comedy Plus, I think they do occasionally clear the algae. But not fast enough…this being London they haven’t got time for anything else at the moment apart from gloating about the Olympic Games…
Wow I wouldn’t expect to see a canal in London covered in green slime. Cool pic.
Alan, it was a rather strange sight to see on a London canal, that’s for sure…
I woke up this morning only to see that the algae has returned with a vengeance. I have lived in Camden for the last four years and never seen it this bad.
Matthew, not sure why it has went so crazy this year. I don’t remember seeing much the past couple of years…
