RAF Museum London Is A Fantastic Place To Visit

Yesterday I set out on a wee adventure to visit the RAF Museum at Hendon in London, which is actually located in a former RAF base, which of course makes perfect sense. It is a fairly easy place to find, I took the tube to Colindale and it was only a 15 minute walk from the station and best of all it is well sign posted.

You will be glad to know that this amazing RAF museum is free to visit, yes I said free! I personally couldn’t believe that the entry price to get into this must visit museum was zilch. Another thing that I couldn’t believe was that it wasn’t mobbed with hoards of tourists and there wasn’t even one Japanese tourist in sight.

The RAF Museum at Hendon is dedicated to the history of aviation and the RAF in particular. There is an amazing collection of real planes, helicopters, cars, artefacts and memorabilia that will quite literally blow your soaks off. It is an amazing experience to get the opportunity to see some of the most famous and historic planes in the world, such as the Messerschmitt, Spitfire, Hawker Hurricane and some more modern ones such as the Vulcan and Buccaneer.

For me one of the highlights and most amazing planes they had on show was the Halifax W1048, which is a wreck that was recovered from Lake Hoklingen in Norway in 1973. They have presented the wreck in such amazing way that I personally could have spent hours looking at it, if I wasn’t dragged away kicking and screaming.

Another plane that I was impressed with and which I couldn’t believe the size of was The Vulcan “V Bomber“, to say it looked massive is an understatement. You don’t really appreciate how big some of those planes are till you see them for real.

There is one thing that I feel would take the whole visit to the Museum on to another level, and that is allowing people on to one of those huge bombers to have a wee wander around, that would be truly fantastic experience. They could charge a few quid per person, like they do if you want to go on one of the simulators.

Overall I would say the RAF Museum at Hendon is a place that is well worth paying a visit too, and I feel that it is probably overlooked by many people because they are not aware of it, or feel it is too far away to visit. But quite simply it is a free day out that shouldn’t be missed, just in case they come to their senses and start charging an admission fee for this London tourist attraction.

I spent 3 hours at the RAF Museum and that wasn’t enough time to take in all the amazing planes, artefacts and memorabilia that was on offer. I will at some point in the near future be making a second visit to take in the things that I missed. I will be back………
