Poundland Workfare Protest

I’m all for this those millionaire politicians who sit in Westminster doing more to help those who are unemployed find a job, whether that is through real training or real courses! What I don’t agree with is the Workfare Scheme which forces unemployed people to work in shops such as Poundland for free!

The bottom line in my onion is that if a company such as Poundland gets a never ending supply of free labour they will be less likely to create real minimum wage jobs! Why would they when they can get free labour? In fact it has been claimed that some big companies are using free Workfare labour to replace paid job positions – a blind man could have seen this one coming!

Today in my very own manor, Kilburn there was a wee protest outside Poundland against slave labour, sorry I meant to say the Workfare scheme! And being the type of blogger I am, I was there to grab a few pictures, I like to cover real London life, not just the sugar coated tourist stuff!

An interesting fact… very interesting fact that I discovered, the Depart of Work and Pensions own research shows that 25% of unemployed people get off benefits through Workfare, compared to 28% of people who look for a job through their own efforts!

Poundland are owned by a US private equity firm called  Warburg Pincus, LLC a company that has to keep on increasing it’s profits to keep their investors happy! I will say no more! I won’t even mention Poppies… just Google it!
