Mount Street Gardens – Mayfair’s Oasis of Calmness
During a recent ramble around Mayfair I discovered a real hidden gem of an oasis called the Mount Street Gardens. Situated only a 5 minute walk from the mayhem of Oxford Street, Piccadilly and Park Lane this pretty garden is a rare find which is worth a visit.
This beautiful little garden was originally the burial ground belonging to the Parish of St. George Hanover Square until it was closed in 1854 following an Act of Parliament prohibiting burials in central London on health grounds – there are still a few reminders of it’s former past!
Mount Street Gardens came to life in 1889 and seemingly the layout has barely changed over the years. What you will find are formal gardens, with lawns, an array of trees, plants, shrubs and flowers. There is also a drinking fountain and a bird bath which the pigeons were patiently queuing up to use.
For those in need of seat there are plenty of park benches which have been donated by regular visitors to the park – I gratefully accepted a seat on one donated by an American couple. There is also a couple of pieces of public art currently on display in amongst the trees and plants…
A strange sight was a huge date palm which is something you don’t come across very often in London. And a nice touch was a secluded little area that would have been perfect hiding away in, if it wasn’t for some clown on his mobile phone talking rather loudly!
The Farm Street Church which can also be accessed via the Gardens is worth popping into for a visit and bit of quiet contemplation – a truly beautiful church.
I hear the word hidden gem far too often concerning places in London discovered by over excited bloggers who don’t get out very much… but believe me people, the Mount Street Gardens really is a hidden gem that is waiting to be discovered! That is unless you already know about it. I was there between 12.15pm and 1pm on what was a reasonable nice day and it wasn’t in the slightest bit busy, especially surprising it was lunch time!
