London Open House Weekend 2010

London Open House Weekend 2010

London Open House weekend is almost before us again and I know from previous experience that you need to be prepared if you want to see the places that interest you the most. Believe me if you are not quick off the mark, you will be left at home twiddling your thumbs wishing you moved your ass quicker…just like me last year!

I remember wading through the Open House London website last year and looking at all the 100′s of properties that I could go and visit. I made a short list of the 10 that interested me the most and then I whittled it down to 6. I would visit 3 properties on the Saturday and 3 on the Sunday. Or I should have said that was the plan, because I spent so long thinking about things, that by the time I tried to book them,  it was to dam late! I was out of luck. I should have known that all you free loading Londoners would be on an event like this worse than a bad rash.

This year I’m going to be better prepared, there will be no messing about this time. The Open House London booking system goes live at 10am on Monday 9th August. Not all buildings need to be pre booked, but the more popular places, the real gems are inundated with people wanting to visit them.

London Open House Weekend runs from 18-19 of September and there will be over 750 properties for you to visit for free, most of them are not normally open to the general public. Buildings in previous years have included Bank of England, Sevendrog Castle, BT Tower, Royal Opera House, Royal Naval College, Lloyd’s of London, Ismali Centre and Centre Point, all of which are rather popular.

Hopefully this year I will manage to get onto the tours  for Tower 42, Foreign and India Office and City Hall, which are top of my must visit list. I really need to get into City Hall for a nosey around because the book I’m writing has the Mayor of London and his cohorts as the bad guys, so it will be good to get some inspiration. But please don’t tell Boris!

London Open House Weekend 2010 is a fantastic opportunity to to visit some of those amazing buildings that you walk past, and wonder what do they look like inside. Depending on the property, there will be guided tours, talks, debates and activities that promise to make for a fun day out. Open House London is a great way to enjoy a weekend without spending too much dough.
