London Cops Riding Thorough The Streets On Horseback
I just love to see those policeman on horseback riding through the streets of London. It is almost a surreal site, watching them trot through the streets next to cars, lorries and busses as they go about there duties of making London a safer place for the law abiding and decent folks that live here.
The cops on horseback are called the Mounted Branch and have amazingly been in operation since 1760. In the early days of their existence, their main duties were to deal with the highwaymen that were robbing travellers on the roads of London. I see not much has changed since those days!
Those policeman on horseback are not just a tourist attraction as some of you American or Japanese tourists may think. They actually play an important part in crime prevention, catching criminals, as well as public order duties and of course, they perform ceremonial duties from time to time as well.
Whenever I see the Mounted Branch on patrol in London, I can’t help but stop and stare as the horses majestically trot through the streets. It sure is a cool site. When this group of mounted cops appeared at Trafalgar Square, I can assure you all eyes and cameras were focussed on them.
