Latin America Comes To Kilburn
The Kilburn 2010 summer festival was in full swing today in Kilburn, North West London. The sky was blue and the sun was shining bright, in fact you could say the weather was pretty much perfect for an outdoor event. This years theme for the festival was Latin America. Seemingly 2010 marks the 200th anniversary of independence for many South American countries.
There was a definite Latin America vibe in the air when I arrived at Grange Park in Kilburn, there was Latin music blasting out into the air, the smells of the Columbian food stall I passed were making my mouth water, as well as some Brazilian girls. And things got even better when I discovered a stall selling Pina Coladas. I developed a taste for Pina Coladas during my times living and holidaying in Barbados, they are quite simply delicious. I quickly ordered two in the aid of research and the next two I ordered were because the first two tasted so dam good.
As tempting as some of the Latin American food, Indian food and Caribbean food stalls were looking and smelling, my stomach was rammed from the late huge Scottish breakfast that I had eaten only 30 minutes earlier. Which was a pity, but I’m available for food sampling most nights of the week!
After a stroll around the park to see what was going on, me and my African Princess planted our butts down on the ground beside the Dance Bus and watched Mina ‘QUEEN SALSA’ give a Salsa demonstration and workshop. I was almost wishing that I wasn’t stone cold sober or I might have dragged my girl on to the dance floor to learn a few Salsa steps, it looked fun. Next up was a couple of old timers who gave a Cajun dance lesson, which was good to watch, but the music made me feel on edge, it made me think of that movie ‘Deliverance’…yikes!
My first two Pina Coladas were demolished and the music stage was now starting to have some decent sounds blasting from it. Which just happened to mean we would walk past the Pina Colada stall. I said, ‘lets go check out the music stage it sounds good, oh what a coincidence there’s that Pina Colada stall let me grab another two.’
On the big stage when we finally got there, July Julay from the Dominican Republic was doing his stuff. This guy sure can sing and the big crowd was loving it. Next up was a Columbian Hip Hop guy Jota Ramos, who wasn’t too bad. He has got potential!
There was seemingly a…don’t laugh..a laughter Yoga workshop happening at some point during the afternoon. I thought the girl on stage advertising the workshop was taking the piss and that she was a comedian when she first came onto the stage to promote it. I was going to go check it out for a good laugh, but I forgot about it.
There was plenty more Latin America music lined up from Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia but we had to unfortunately leave early to get to a fantastic Nigerian Barbecue…
