Alastair, I know what you mean about some of those London facts. It must have taken a hell of lot of research to discover what was real and fantasy! I was aware the nose was a more recent additon, but I never knew it was put up by a journalist... thanks for the little London fact...

The smallcarBIGCITY tours look like fun and maybe one of these days I will get back to you on that one...

Hi William,

3 years ago i began a company called smallcarBIGCITY and had to learn all about London, No easy feat i can tell you. One of the hardest things was trying to work out whether or not some of the quirkier facts were true or not. For the first few weeks (maybe months) of taking people around this magnificent city i would hear lots different versions of these facts and stories, quite often contradicting mine, and this is what is so great about this city.
For example on the inside of Admiralty Arch (heading towards Trafalgar Square)there is what looks like a bronze nose situated about 3 meters up on the wall. This i believed for along time (and after extensive research) to be the Duke Of Wellington's. It was said to be a copy of his nose, that a witty architect had put up so that the Cavalry men on their horse would ride through the arch and touch the nose for good luck. Unfortunately though recently it has come to light (via the Express newspaper) that it was put up in the early 90's by a journalist with a penchant for rebel art. He was trying to make a statement about Big Brother and all the cameras that were watching us. The point i want to make is that London is so big and old that it inspires people to find the best in of it. Also to be able to have something so subtle on one of London's grandest monuments and no one have any clear idea of where it came from for potential 80 years (since the arch was built in 1914) is a fantastic tribute to the crazy but wonderful city we live in.

I am grateful that you have helped people to become interested in the city i live/work and play in. if you would ever like to come on a tour with smallcarBIGCITY please email me through my website smallcarBIGCITY.com (mention who you are) and i will personally take you around town in one of our classic Mini Coopers.

I don't know why anyone is getting their panties in a twist over this tbh.

thank you for the facts, even if some are no longer true :-) i appreciate it :-)

And as for everyone else, link me to your website where you post facts about a city, then i'll come along in a couple of years and tell you you're wrong because time has passed (as it does) and new things have happened... Get some manners!

Christine I have visited at least 20 different countries...but who is counting! You should maybe have asked how many tube systems I have travelled on in different parts of the world.

You obviously don't use the Jubilee and Bakerloo lines like I do on a very regular basis. London Underground is I think the most expensive in the world and it is a disgrace.
