In Search Of The Best Ice Cream In London

I had heard it said from more than one source that the best ice cream in all of London could be found in Camden. A place by the name of Marine Ices of Chalk Farm to be precise…

Even though Camden is literally on my doorstep, I very rarely head over to the that neck of the woods. Why I haven’t really got an answer to that one. Because of life’s adventures I found myself in Camden yesterday afternoon, which gave me the perfect excuse to go and hunt out Marines Ices.

With the help of Google I found out exactly where Marine Ices were located. I must have walked past them a few times in the past and never paid them much attention. How was I to know the ice cream was meant to be so good.

Without too much of a problem I found what I was looking for. I had found the treasure at the end of the rainbow or was it going to end in a huge disappointment. From personal experience I find that more often than not, when people hype things up, it tends to never turn out as good as you expect.

It sure was a warm day. I had the shades on and I was wearing my favourite Sergio Tacchini polo shirt. I was looking cool as fuck. But I guess you are here to find out about the ice cream as opposed to how good I was looking…I thought if I was gonna be eating some Italian ice cream I would dress for the occasion.

I approached the window of Marine Ices with trepidation. Was it really going to be as good as my friends had said. I was starting to get excited like a wee kid as I read the choices on the menu. So many different flavours to choose from. This was going to be tricky…

It was £1.80 for 1 scoop or £3.40 for 2 scoops… WTF I thought it better be fucking good at those prices.

I spent a few minutes surveying the menu trying to see what would be worthy of £3.40…WTF. It was a close choice between Vanilla with Madagascan vanilla pods, Caribbean CoconutRrum ‘n’ Raisin made with Jamaican rum, Coffee made with Arabica coffee beans…All of which sounded delicious. I however ended up buying the Honey and Ginger.

I paid the Eastern European girl the money… Is there anybody left in Eastern Europe nowadays? I guess they can’t find enough Italians to work in Italian ice cream shops and restaurants nowadays!

The ice cream looked good, even though the scoops looked a tad on the small side, way too small in fact. I looked at it and tried to forgot about how small it looked for £3.40. I tasted it and…and…it tasted dam good, real dam good. It truly was delicious.

Life felt good as I devoured my Honey and Ginger ice cream from the legendary Marine Ices. Was it or is it the best ice cream in London. Well I honestly cant answer that one, but what I do know, is that it is as good as it gets…If you are ever passing through Camden I would make a point of hunting out this place because I’m certain you wont be disappointed.

The last time I had ice cream this good was when I was holidaying in Lake Garda and those were truly speical…I will have to go back there one of these days. An  amazing place…

I guess the reason that Marines Ices have been in business for 80 years is a pretty good one. They are a business that seems to have a fair bit of history behind them. But you cant eat history…So I ain’t going to go into that…But what I do know is that I will be back again one of these days real soon to sample the Caribbean Coconut,Rum ‘n’ Raisin made with Jamaican rum…Sounds delicious.
