The sun has been shining bright all week long in London. This fantastic hot weather we are having has had me craving ice cream…sand and sea. I desperately want to be beside the seaside, with a nice cooling breeze blowing on my skin, sinking a few ice cold bottles of lager, as I watch the girls in bikinis…I meant to say watch the waves gently hitting the shore.
If there is one minor thing about life in London, that I don’t like and that is the fact I’m so far away from a nice beach and the sea. Virtually of all of the 39 years…for ever 39…I have been walking the face of this planet, I have lived but a mere short car ride away from beautiful beaches and the sea. The cold…freezing North Sea and some amazing beaches was never to far away from me back home in Aberdeen. And when I was living in Barbados there were beautiful beaches everywhere…the Caribbean Sea was a mere stones throw away and the Atlantic Ocean was only a 10 minute drive away. Nothing beats heading to the seaside for some rest and relaxation.
I arrived in London the early part of February 2009 and I haven’t ventured out of this amazing city once…not even for a day trip. Since that day I stepped off the plane from Barbados the thought or the desire to escape from London hasn’t even crossed my mind. I’m honestly having too much fun here and I feel like I have barely scratched the surface as to what this crazy city has to offer. So many places still to visit and adventures to be enjoyed..!
One of these days I will pack up my bags again and head off to some place else, so I might as well make the most of living in London while I’m here, that’s the way I see things. However this heatwave we are currently having has really, really got me wanting to be beside the seaside so badly. I need to feel that freezing cold water on my skin, the sand between my toes and get some sea air in my lungs.
It was so hot last night that I even had a dream that I was running along the sands of Balmadie Beach, just outside Aberdeen, stripping off my clothes until I was completely naked and I then dived into the freezing cold water of the North Sea. The joy of having the water hit my skin was orgasmic. The last time I actually swam in the North Sea was around 1979, it was so dam cold that it turned my skin blue.
There is only one way to deal with my craving and that is to give into it. I simply must get myself along to the seaside. From doing a wee bit of research I have put together a short list of places that are only a short train journey away from London – Brighton, Bognor Regis, Eastbourne and Southend-on-Sea all have sand, sea and sometimes sunshine…they are maybe not quite as good as what I’m use to, but when your desperate like I am…they will do nicely.
Escape from London…all I need to do now is check the weather forecast and see, where and if the sunshine will still be around at the weekend. I better go and buy a bucket and spade for my African Princess because I just know she is gong to want to build some sand castles..!
