I Guess That’s Why They Call London The Big Smoke

The Big Smoke is a nickname that is sometimes used to refer to London and the pictures, which I’m featuring today beautifully illustrates that point. London is most definitely still the Big Smoke

I was recently standing at one of London’s best beauty spots, called the Point in Greenwich Park, when I noticed the smoke blasting out of a huge industrial chimney. It did cross my mind what kind of pollution was that chimney blasting out into the environment.

London came about its nickname of “The Big Smoke” because of the pollution problems caused by the industrialisation of the city during the late nineteenth century and by the looks of things it is still happening to a certain extent to this very day.

If I had never seen the smoke pouring out of the chimney with my own eyes, I would have just assumed it was coming out of a London bus or one of those Eastern European lorries. When I see those diesel monsters blasting out their fumes into the air, I have a lot of sympathy for London’s  cyclists. It must be knocking years of their life’s.

London or should I say “The Big Smoke” earned its nickname and by the looks of things it isn’t in a big enough hurry to lose it.
