I Almost Forgot My Anniversary With The Grim Reaper

I Almost Forgot My Anniversary With The Grim Reaper

It just over a year ago since that fateful day when   I danced with death and looked the Grim Reaper square in his ugly face and smelt his sickly breath on my face. Not something I want to repeat any time soon, but then again none of us know when, where or how our time in this crazy world we live on is going to end.

I suppose you could say Sunday the 1st of January 2009 was the anniversary of a moment in my life that I should forget all about, it was the day I almost drowned at Silversands beach in Barbados. But I cant forget and for the the record I don’t really want too. I would go as far as saying it is a miracle that I’m hear today. The fact of the matter is that every single time I think about my very close and very real brush with death, it reminds me of how lucky I am to be alive and kicking.

As I struggled to stay afloat in the water for what seemed like an eternity I can remember thinking to myself I’m not ready to die, I have so much that I still want to do. Those could quite easily been my last memories, instead hear I am enjoying life, breathing in the polluted, filthy and grimy London air that tastes so dam good.

I can remember those moments unbelievable clearly when I took what I thought were my last breaths, then sank beneath those cruel, dark waves of the Atlantic Ocean. Only to be brought back to life on Silversands beach, with blinding lights all around me. It took me a few moment to realise that I was actually still alive as opposed to being in another world.

Like all memorable anniversaries I did what always do, I got myself something French, bubbly and curvy and no I’m not talking about that black French girl I use to date, but a couple of bottles of Lanson Champagne. Drinking that Champagne was close enough to heaven for me….!

It was a surreal experience, because as the incident unfolded it strangly felt like it was almost not happening to me. After I blacked out, a local guy somehow got to me and took be back to shore. The next thing I knew was that I woke up on the shore, with a white light blinding me and feeling close to death. I guess the blinding light, along with the water splashing onto my feet was what brought me back to life.

I never even had the kiss of life or anything. The first voice I heard was from a German doctor who was staying in the hotel telling everyone to get out the way because he was a doctor. He took my pulse and told me it was fine and my heart rate was also normal. I was in fair bit of physical pain for the the next week or so, which was rather fortunate for me, I suppose….
