Havana Cultura Hits The Barbican In London

I’m not really into writing previews about anything; I much prefer to write reviews. But I thought I should do my wee bit for cultural relations between the UK and Cuba. Did you know that this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution, if you didn’t you know now!

To celebrate the anniversary a series of events are been held over the next few weeks, called Havana Cultura, which are taken place at the Barbican centre in London, as part of the worldwide celebrations to commemorate the revolution.

The events taking place over the next few weeks will include performances from some of Cuba’s top up and coming artists, including musicians, visual artists, dancers, performers and writers. As well as the live performances, there will also be Cuban films shown as part of the Cine Cuba festival.

There will be some free previews in the open spaces of the Barbican by the artists performing at the event, this Saturday and Sunday from 2pm. As well as some free cocktail classes by Havana Club’s top Mixologists. I also hope there is the opportunity for some hands on participation for me, because I developed a taste for rum, when I was living in Barbados.

Havana Cultura, is actually a cultural initiative developed by Havana Club. A rum, which I think I need to try out and see where it ranks in comparison to my current favourite rum and possible the best rum the world, Mount Gay Sugar Cane Brandy Rum. Now that stuff tastes even better than whisky and believe me, it almost breaks the heart of Scotsman like me to say such a thing.

Before my fellow Scots try to stop me at Hadrian’s Wall the next time I try to enter Scotland and refuse me entry, I’m at least drinking my rum with Barr’s Iron Brew!

Havana Cultura is an event that aims to encourage people to explore the talent and vibrancy that is currently coming out of Havana, Cuba. I for one will be attending on Sunday to see what its all about.
