Motorists definitely need to give me break as well, they are almost as crazy as the cyclists. Not all cyclists are bad I have come across plenty that are decent enough people and have got manners. I must admit sometimes cyclists in London don't have it easy, some motorists haven't got a clue and the roads are covered in pot holes. However in saying that there are quite a few cyclists out there that are insane!

Whilst the story of a pedestrian being killed by a cyclist is very sad and inexcusable in this case, I would like to draw attention to the 642 pedestrians killed by motorists each year [http://www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200809/cmhansrd/cm090126/text/90126w0003.htm#09012627000041].

Perhaps an article entitled "give me a fu**ing break motorists" would be more pertinent (actually 161 times more so).

As for the idea that "this is getting worse" the number of pedestrians being injured or seriously injured by cyclists is decreasing [see same link as above].

The idea that it's on the pavements that cyclists are a menace is well addressed here: http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/standard/article-23681385-pedestrians-more-at-risk-than-cyclists.do

I'm glad I don't have to drive in London. I think if I had to drive on a daily basis in this crazy city it would drive me insane!

But being a pedestrian is bad enough, with cyclists on the pavement and drivers constantly ignoring the green man when its flashing. The only thing the various councils in this mad city seem to care about is dishing out parking tickets!

Firstly great article I have had to visit london for work today and from now on will call in sick if a job there comes up again. Any person required to work in london should be given specialist training in police driving if they hope to survive. If its not bus drivers trying to force you off the road, scooters trying to drive on your bonnet or suicidal cycles its people walking obliviously across the road only to turn and call you a wan*** when you have to drop anchor and pull off a stig style stop overall knackered before i started work. Well I am off for a magners thanks for a great article R

Surely this is a case of the squeaky wheel getting the oil - One doesn't notice the great majority of cyclists who obey the rules because .. well.. they're obeying the rules so nobody notices them.

Today I was on my bike, stopped - behind the white line - at a red light and a pedestrian who was in a hurry to cross the street and wasn't paying attention, nor crossing at the cross-walk - who was looking elsewhere - ran into me, knocked me right over - like being body-checked in ice hockey. She stopped and apologised and everything, and a motorist who was stopped at the same light got out and helped me up from the road and disentangle me from my bike - but seriously...

How about *everybody* should pay more attention to other road users - a little courtesy and attention goes a long way.

I agree and I have written about crazy pedestrians, there are plenty of them going about. I think most cyclists realise that they can be sometimes difficult to spot, by both drivers and pedestrians. I think I have the answer and that is all cyclists should be made to wear bright fluorescent pink boilers suits and have a loud tune playing at all times like those ice creams vans, that should solve the problem.

There is huge issue with cyclists that are either totally oblivious to, or don’t know, or don’t care about the rules of the road. The way I see it, is that there isn’t just a small minority of cyclists that are a menace to society, it is a large percentage of them.

Maybe cyclists should have got their mummies to tell them, stop running red lights, you are meant to let people cross at zebra crossings, when the green man at a pedestrian crossing is flashing it doesn’t mean cycle, or what about when you grow up stop cycling on the pavement, and my personal favourite cycling down one way roads the wrong way and I could go on and on………!

Cyclists need to slow the hell down and quit being in such a dam rush to get wherever it is they are going, just like drivers on the road do and just like 90% of the pedestrians on the streets of London who are always in a hurry.

I don't for one second blame all cyclists out there, just most of them. I know there are some good ones out there.

While it is true that there are cyclists who are complete maniacs, it is statistically pedestrians who are responsible for most collisions with cyclists. The reason for this is that many pedestrians are completely oblivious to anything other than a motor vehicle and constantly take action on the roads under the impression that it is safe because no motor vehicles are coming. I have had three collisions with pedestrians in the two years I have been cycling daily in London and all three were the pedestrians fault, as they were crossing the road where or when they were not supposed to. The worse happened when a pedestrian decided to cross the road about 20 yards away from a pedestrian crossing and then stopped in the middle of the road when he saw me coming and couldn't decide which way to jump out of the way. It was a bad collision, but I came off considerably worse, with various cuts and scrapes to my legs.
Aggressive cyclists are a menace off the road, I agree. There is absolutely no excuse for a cyclist to crash into a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing and especially not on a pavement. However, pedestrians are a huge menace to any cyclist, even the law-abiding ones, as pedestrians often cross roads without checking for bikes, run across pedestrian crossings when it is not their turn, stand too close or on the road while waiting for a pedestrian light to turn and cross the road through traffic jams.
Blaming cyclists for pedestrian-cyclist accidents is both short-sighted and ignorant. The blame is often shared, if not wholly on the pedestrian, and it is the type of attitude in this blog which perpetuates the notion that it is only cyclists who need to change their attitude and not pedestrians who need to remember what their mummies told them about looking both ways before crossing a road.
