I wrote an article a while back relating to crazy London cyclists and it is obviously not just in this city, where some of them are a menace to society. I was heading to a meeting this morning and I read in the free rag that a cyclist Darren Hall, had just been jailed for 7 months for killing a pedestrian in Weymouth.
Darren hall was, get this speeding down a hill and he couldn’t be bothered to stop at the red light, so he mounted the pavement and sped round a blind bend where he hit a 74 year old pedestrian. Which resulted in the death of the old man 12 days later.
As most people are aware, whether you live in London, Aberdeen, Edinburgh or anywhere else in the UK, cyclists are becoming an ever increasing menace to pedestrians. There is also a noticeable percentage of them that are menace to car drivers, they haven’t got a clue about the rules of the road.
As far as I’m concerned too many cyclists are self righteous bastards, that never make a mistake. It is never their fault, it is always the car driver, it is always the pedestrians fault. It doesn’t matter if they are speeding along on the pavement, or shooting through red lights or when the green man is flashing, they are never in the wrong.
From what I can gather and what cyclists are busy preaching today is that very few pedestrians actually get killed by cyclists every year. I would love to know how many pedestrians are injured by cyclists every year. I have seen numerous near misses since I arrived in London and I have also witnessed cyclists that have nearly been run over by cars because they don’t know that red means stop.
Lets get back to the story of the old man recklessly killed by Darren Hall, how would all those self righteous cyclists feel if it had happened to their dad or granddad, how would anybody feel. I think the law is joke that they only gave the cyclist 7 months, he will be out in 4 months. I think he should have got a minimum of at least 5 years. I hope the family campaigns to have the sentence increased.
I would like to know why the Judge didn’t at least give Hall 2 years, which was the maximum sentence that he could have got under this blatantly out of date 1861 law that he was charged under. Another Judge that lives in his fancy tower and has totally lost touch with realaity.
As I was saying about what self righteous bastards that many cyclists are, cyclist group CTC say that there is no need for specific legislation to deal with dangerous riders, because it is such rare occurrence that a cyclist kills a pedestrian. But I feel they are totally missing the point, because as I stated earlier how many pedestrians are injured or nearly hit by reckless cyclists every day, let alone every year. There needs to be a specific law to deal with dangerous and reckless cyclists, because things are getting worse.
Many cyclists are a menace to pedestrians and I have said it in the past, if they cant handle cycling on the road, get the fuck off their bike and push it to the nearest park instead of cycling on the pavement. Also make them start obeying the rules of the road and if they don’t, make them pay the consequences. Just like car drives, who have to pay a fine and get points if they drive recklessly, get caught running red lights, or for speeding.
Mark my words it is only a matter of time before we read about a young child being run over and killed on the pavement by a crazed cyclist. As is the usual story in this country, it will take the death of wee one, to make the authorities take notice and then take proper action against cyclists.
As we all know if a reckless driver hits another car or even hits a pedestrian, and causes injury, their insurance company will be facing a compensation claim. I wonder if it is possible for a pedestrian that has been struck and injured by a cyclist to sue for damages?
I suppose the chances of the Labour Government coming up with a new law, are quite slim and anyway it would probably take them about 10 years and cost about £10 million in expenses by the time they had drafted it up and made it legal.

Yes, of course it is (and there are plenty of ‘no win, no fee’ solicitors to help). If the cyclist is a member of the London Cycling Campaign, the CTC or the British Cycling Federation then they will be covered by FREE third party insurance. It’s free because injury caused by cyclists is very rare, usually minor and a statistically low risk. In fact cyclists are usually the worst off in collisions with pedestrians. That said, cycling on the pavement is illegal, dangerous and not condoned by any of the three campaigning organisations above. Since the average sentence handed out to drivers who kill is less than six months, I guess Darren Hall got what society thinks he deserved? Did you notice the last time a pedestrian was killed by a motor vehicle? No? If you live in London then one will have been killed within a mile of where you live in the last year. You didn’t notice becausse the media doesn’t report such commonplace events – it concentrates instead on the first pedestrian killed by a cyclist in the last 5 years and the fourth in forty! I’m sorry cyclists p#ss you off so much – perhaps you can’t stand being the last to arrive (even Top Gear couldn’t find a quicker way across London)
I must admit that the sentences handed out to car drivers that kill through negligence is a complete joke. It is about time that the judges in this country stopped hanging around in darkened rooms with their trouser legs rolled up doing strange things with goats and started dishing out sentences that fit the crime.
As for finding a quicker way to get anywhere, I feel that sometimes we all need to slow down a few notches. Including car drivers that speed and run red lights, as well as always in a hurry cyclists and pedestrians that run in front of fast moving cars. Getting to wherever quicker is not always the answer, maybe we all need to slow down a bit.
While it is true that there are cyclists who are complete maniacs, it is statistically pedestrians who are responsible for most collisions with cyclists. The reason for this is that many pedestrians are completely oblivious to anything other than a motor vehicle and constantly take action on the roads under the impression that it is safe because no motor vehicles are coming. I have had three collisions with pedestrians in the two years I have been cycling daily in London and all three were the pedestrians fault, as they were crossing the road where or when they were not supposed to. The worse happened when a pedestrian decided to cross the road about 20 yards away from a pedestrian crossing and then stopped in the middle of the road when he saw me coming and couldn’t decide which way to jump out of the way. It was a bad collision, but I came off considerably worse, with various cuts and scrapes to my legs.
Aggressive cyclists are a menace off the road, I agree. There is absolutely no excuse for a cyclist to crash into a pedestrian at a pedestrian crossing and especially not on a pavement. However, pedestrians are a huge menace to any cyclist, even the law-abiding ones, as pedestrians often cross roads without checking for bikes, run across pedestrian crossings when it is not their turn, stand too close or on the road while waiting for a pedestrian light to turn and cross the road through traffic jams.
Blaming cyclists for pedestrian-cyclist accidents is both short-sighted and ignorant. The blame is often shared, if not wholly on the pedestrian, and it is the type of attitude in this blog which perpetuates the notion that it is only cyclists who need to change their attitude and not pedestrians who need to remember what their mummies told them about looking both ways before crossing a road.
I agree and I have written about crazy pedestrians, there are plenty of them going about. I think most cyclists realise that they can be sometimes difficult to spot, by both drivers and pedestrians. I think I have the answer and that is all cyclists should be made to wear bright fluorescent pink boilers suits and have a loud tune playing at all times like those ice creams vans, that should solve the problem.
There is huge issue with cyclists that are either totally oblivious to, or don’t know, or don’t care about the rules of the road. The way I see it, is that there isn’t just a small minority of cyclists that are a menace to society, it is a large percentage of them.
Maybe cyclists should have got their mummies to tell them, stop running red lights, you are meant to let people cross at zebra crossings, when the green man at a pedestrian crossing is flashing it doesn’t mean cycle, or what about when you grow up stop cycling on the pavement, and my personal favourite cycling down one way roads the wrong way and I could go on and on………!
Cyclists need to slow the hell down and quit being in such a dam rush to get wherever it is they are going, just like drivers on the road do and just like 90% of the pedestrians on the streets of London who are always in a hurry.
I don’t for one second blame all cyclists out there, just most of them. I know there are some good ones out there.
