Forman & Field – London Cure Smoked Salmon Review

Forman & Field – London Cure Smoked Salmon Review

When I got asked to review London Cure Smoked Scottish Salmon sold by a company called Forman & Field there was only ever going to be one answer, YES!

For those of you that have never heard of Forman & Field they are a fine food mail order company based in London who specialise in fresh traditional British produce sourced from small, independent producers. You can check them out at http://www.formanandfield.com. H. Forman & Son, a 100 year old family business are incidentally the parent company of Forman & Field.

As requested the 200g sample of London Cure hand sliced Scottish Smoked Salmon arrived bang on schedule on Tuesday morning. That was a good start! As you would expect from a quality mail order company selling fine foods, the salmon arrived in a sturdy box and in perfect condition.

The salmon itself was contained in a well presented packet. The real test of course, is not how nicely presented the salmon is, but how good it tastes. A quick read through of the blurb accompanying the London Cure Smoked Salmon, said the recipe used was created a century ago, and that it was devised to show off the quality of the salmon rather than cloud it in smoke. Low in salt, it was delicate, delicious and softly smoky. After reading the sales stuff I was chomping at the bit to start some serious sampling.

I have been eaten Scottish smoked salmon since I was a wee loon and my favoured way of eating the King of Fish is by dipping it in naturally brewed soy sauce. It doesn’t get any better than that if you ask me. I know there are loads of fancy things you can do with smoked salmon such as Cucumber and Smoked Salmon Summer Roll, Smoked Salmon Puff Pastry or Smoked Salmon Couscous Sushi. If I really want to get fancy I will make a smoked salmon cream cheese roll. I’m Old School!

The Forman & Son London Cure Smoked Scottish Salmon smelled good and looked good. Armed with my wee bowl of soy sauce I tucked into the salmon. And … and it was rather tasty, full of natural flavours and best of all the smoky taste wasn’t overpowering. Just the way I like it! I have tasted some smoked salmons in the past that have went overboard on the smokiness and totally killed the natural flavours, which is a BIG mistake if you ask me.

Armed with a tub of finest cream cheese from the deli I made 3 smoked salmon rolls, which were fairly tasty. Gordon Ramsay would have been proud of me … maybe not! The Old School way with just the naturally brewed soy sauce was the business and the best way to eat such a nice piece of smoked salmon…sometimes there is no need to get fancy!

I can’t fault Forman & Field. The product arrived on the day specified, well packaged and in good condition and more importantly the London Cure Smoked Scottish Salmon was full of delicious flavours. If I was to have paid for the smoked salmon it would have cost £9.95 for 200g, which serves 3-4 people and represents fairly good value for money.
