Down At The River Thames Beach
I was down at the South Bank of the River Thames in London yesterday afternoon taking in the Mayors Thames Festival, which was basically a collection of the usual suspects of food stalls, along with a variety of arts and crafts stalls and some entertainment, which I kept on missing !
I haven’t really got the desire to write about the Mayors latest event, because it was in my mind totally lacking in excitement, there was nothing new or innovative about it. They need to get some fresh, new and young blood in the Mayors Events planning and organising team, they really do.
Am I getting old or what , but I saw two security guards at the event that looked like they were little School kids. These two kiddies couldn’t have dealt with an old granny with two walking sticks who was causing trouble, let alone a junked up scum bag. I may be a cynic but, cheap labour springs to mind.
The South Bank of the Thames, was totally jam packed with people and the buzz wasn’t a good one for me, so I headed down to the banks of the River Thames, the tide was out so I guess you could say it was kind of like a beach, it was in fact the River Thames Beach. Admittedly not a very pretty or inviting beach, but never the less it resembled a beach I suppose.
It has been 8 months since I left the Caribbean and the warm sunshine and beautiful beaches of Barbados to come and live in London. In fact I will be honest and admit that there isn’t really too much that I miss about life over there, except the amazing beaches, the cool waters of the Caribbean Sea and the general ambiance of the place. So as I stepped onto the glistening sands of the River Thames it brought back happy memories of another place and another time in my life. Well the sands of the Thames were glistening with motor oil and rubbish.
I was tempted to buy a coconut, from the coconut seller, but I restrained myself. As I reminded myself that they had been sitting on a boat for six weeks before they got to the UK and that they wouldn’t taste anything like the ones I was used to, which were hanging on the tree a few hours before I was drinking and eating them. Anyway the coconuts looked so tiny I would have needed 4 to quench my thirst and for the price he was charging I could have bought my own tree in Barbados!
The South Bank of the Thames may have been mayhem between Tower Bridge and Westminster Bridge. However when you cross over the road of Westminster Bridge and go to the other side it is like entering another world, it is real quiet.
It beats me why they didn’t have some sort of entertainment along this stretch of the Thames facing the Houses of Parliament. Maybe next year Boris, you will let me put on my own wee event as an add on to the Mayors Thames Festival. I will give you something that is original, innovative, fun and cool, everything that your event isn’t!

Didn’t make it as far as the beach. Was at the Korean showcase in front of City Hall on Saturday. Did you manage to catch a glimpse of the Korean taekwando and dance?
Luckily we picked Sat instead of Sun as the weather was horrible on Sun.
Unfortunatly I missed those events, which is a pity because they would have been good to see.
