Chocolate Beer At The Greenwich Union

Chocolate Beer At The Greenwich Union

Chocolate Beer…yesterday afternoon I went in search of beer, not any old beer, but Chocolate Beer. I had to travel many miles from my home in Kilburn, all the way to a bar called The Greenwich Union…I think you can guess what part of London this bar is located in!

Real life, or I should say work had brought me to the O2 at North Greenwich for a lunch time appointment, after which the rest of the day would be spent wandering around in one of my favourite parts of London. So many places to visit and things to do in Greenwich.

After a few hours of being a tourist in Greenwich, I was in need of a break…I had demolished my packed lunch and a craving for some chocolate beer descended upon me. I had read so much about the stuff and I was curious to see if this beer was as tasty as it was cracked up to be. All I had to do was find The Greenwich Union bar.

Luckily for me I was walking with my ‘book of life’, which contains my notes for the  fiction masterpiece that  I’m in the process of writing, and the addresses and  not so good  directions of places I want to visit, if I’m in the area. All I had to do was find Royal Hill and I would be sipping on some Chocolate Beer. The first 4 people I asked for directions were all more confused  than me. But when all looked lost I found a street map beside Greenwich Park and I was saved.

Like all true adventurers and tourists I found my way to my destination, The Greenwich Union which is located in an area of Greenwich that  has real good vibe to it. And even better, the bar was a nice place inside, very comfortable and welcoming indeed. And it got even better…the girl serving behind the bar had perfect manners, all I needed was for the Chocolate Beer to taste as good as the fancy bottle and label looked.

I pad the £3.90 for the 330ml bottle of Chocolate Beer, which aint cheap, but then again it isn’t exactly overly expensive either. I grabbed a seat out the font of bar, poured the drink, looked at it, smelled it and finally sipped some. And was Chocolate Beer a crazy idea or was it actually a decent tasting drink. Well…it is a very nice tasting beer, and thankfully there isn’t an overly strong taste of chocolate, more of a hint of dark chocolate, which I love. This beer is the business.

The Greenwich Union is owned by a small London Brewer called The Meantime Brewing Company, who produce a selection of beers in small batches, including the very delicious Chocolate Beer. These guys know what they are doing, that is for sure. I think they need to seriously think about opening up another bar over my side of London!

If I lived in Greenwich, The Greenwich Union would be my local, it is my kinda bar. And as far as the Chocolate Beer is concerned it is a very nice brew indeed and I shall be back again for some more.

  1. Oh wow. I have to try one of those!! Yummy.

I loved this post and I’m loving your photos lately! Very nice.

  2. Thanks…looking at the picture of the chocolate beer got me craving the stuff…

  3. Hmmmmm….. I can’t even begin to imagine it.
To my mind, these two things should just never meet – at least not at the same time.
However, in a world that now features such culinary delights as bacon ice cream, anything goes, right? If I come across chocolate beer, I will definitely try it. mainly because of your recommendation. :)

In the meantime, do you think they’ll ever figure out how to get beer and pizza together in the same bottle? That one might be right up my alley! ;)

  4. Bacon ice cream, that sounds disgusting, however I would like to try it out sometime for the hell of it.

The thing with the Chocolate beer and what makes it work for me is that it is more of a very light hint of dark chocolate. It still tastes like beer.

I don’t know about getting the beer and pizza in the same bottle, but I have had them both in my mouth at the same time on numerous occasions…
