Chicken and Chips
Last night I couldn’t be bothered with cooking, you know how it goes. I just didn’t have the energy. I was burnt out. I think all my weekend activities had finally caught up with me. It sure had been a busy few days. I was at the Blackstreet gig at Indigo2 on Friday evening, I went to The Boat Race on Saturday, Zippos Circus on Sunday and a party on Monday afternoon. And even terrorist demands had all conspired to tire me oot.
The great thing about living in the Kilburn area of London, is that there is plenty of variety as far as eating out is concerned or for an even greater choice of places to eat, Edgeware Road, is only short bus journey away. With so many places to choose from it wasn’t going to be easy deciding where to eat.
I wasn’t in the mood for anything fancy, so going round to Gordon Ramsay’s house for dinner was out of the equation. Anyway that is probably the only way you will sample his cooking nowadays! What I would have settled for would have been some really good fish & chips from the good old chippie. But alas that is something I haven’t been able to find in London. Back home in Aberdeen there were a couple of places that use to do amazing fish and chips and what I would have done for some of that last night.
In the end the answer to my hungry stomach came in the shape of the much ridiculed and maligned Nandos. It was only 10 minute stroll from where I live and even though the service may sometimes be a wee bit ropey, the chicken however is usually excellent. And they are fairly cheap. Even though the prices have went up a fair bit recently. Perhaps they went up a little bit too much, are these guys forgetting there is a recession on.
I decided on the chicken wings, chips and the rice for my main course, with the pita bread and dip to start. As usual the food was pretty dam good and as usual the service was lousy. Why is it every time I go to a Nandos you get them turning up at the table with the wrong food. Or why as soon as you put your knife and fork down they are asking if you are finished. Give me a fucking break! I’m still chewing my food and the plate is half full, does it look like I’m finished. It was like they were desperate for the table, which I could maybe slightly understand if the restaurant had been packed, but the place was half empty.
I suppose I cant complain at the price, which was around £22 for the two of us. In my books that represents better value than a second rate Chinese or Indian takeaway, which costs around the same. The taste of that delicious chicken most certainly makes up for the second rate customer service, which seems to be par for the course for Nandos.
