CCTV or if you want its full name closed circuit television. It seems like that every other street you walk down in London there is a CCTV camera watching your every move.
Most of us have nothing to fear, they are after all a crime prevention and detection tool, well supposedly. But how effective they are at doing what they are meant to do is seriously open to debate. The truth of the matter is they are next to useless.
I remember all those years ago when we first got them back home in Aberdeen. One my friends was a wee bit pissed off when they were installed in his street. He just didn’t like the idea of some wackjob in the control room spying on him.
However one day some fucker crashed into his car and sped off without reporting the incident. My friend as you would expect, thought it shouldn’t be too hard for the police to catch the scumbag. All those CCTV cameras would surely have picked something up. Forget it, the picture quality was so poor and grainy that the cameras never picked anything up. What a surprise!
Everywhere you go in London it seems like there are CCTV cameras keeping an eye on things. But from what I can gather the picture quality hasn’t improved too much. I was reading in the paper yesterday about a homophobic attack on a gay guy that was brutally beaten to death by three young girls near Trafalgar Square. . WTF is happening to the world, when shit like this is happening. The pictures taken of the attackers shown in the paper, which were images taken form the CCTV, were utterly fucking useless.
On a less serious note another one of my friends always makes sure he chains his bicycle near to CCTV cameras, because it makes him feel safe, or I should say it use too. In his own words, “who is gonna be dumb enough to steal a bike when there is CCTV pointed at it”. Well the inevitable happened a couple of weeks ago. You guessed it his bike was stolen.
You guessed it again, the picture quality of the incident was so poor that they could hardly make the bike out, let alone what the person stealing it looked like.
It seems that CCTV is only slightly better than useless. In fact you may wondering what fucking use it is at all? Well closed circuit television is seemingly only good for observing people and traffic violations. I might of guessed, it is good enough for spotting cars that are parked where they shouldn’t. I get the picture it is useful for making the council some money.
So it seems CCTV is no better than a psychological deterrent, or security theatre. London is quite possible the world capital of CCTV, you can barely walk down a main street without seeing big brother watching you form above. But they aren’t really watching much.
I witnessed fight between 2 young guys in Kilburn High Road a couple of weeks ago, while I was waiting for a bus. It ended up with them holding on to each other for an eternity. CCTV cameras everywhere and where were the cops, your guess is as good as mine. So if you ever get attacked don’t hold your breath that the cops are gong to come anytime soon, just because there is CCTV watching over you. The operator is too busy spying on the good looking girls.
It seems that multi millions of pounds have been wasted on CCTV in London to make us feel safer. But it doesn’t really work. violent crime, muggings, assaults, rapes, burglaries, murders, shootings and shoplifting are still happening all around us on a daily basis in London.
Politicians need to get a grip of reality, I feel that Gordon Brown while he is still in power needs to get real, or he will be out of a job. And I doubt if anybody is going to buy his book and pay him millions when he gets kicked out. Unlike his old buddy Tony Blair, who it seems is doing rather nicely for himself. What society needs is more real police on the streets, (not those community police jokers) and not driving around in fucking cars all the time, but actually pounding the beat. I know most of them look so out of shape and unfit they probably couldn’t manage it.
Even though CCTV is pretty much a con, the Government thinks it is a great crime prevention tool. What they really mean is that it is a hell of lot cheaper than employing real police officers. There seemingly just isn’t the money to spend on protecting the public and making society a better place to live in.
Gordon Brown has okayed a deal to send 500 more troops to Afghanistan. What about 500 more cops on the streets of Britain. It is about time the UK broke free from the shirt tails of the Yanks and let them get on with their never ending wars by themselves. We cant even sort out the street gangs in the fucking UK let alone win wars in Iraqi and Afghanistan. It is the same in America they cant even deal with the gang bangers in LA, let alone beat highly skilled Afghan fighters on their home turf.
I believe that terrorism is something that needs to be fought, but I have no faith or believe that this is the reason why we are in Iraqi or Afghanistan anymore. I personally think that the way to fight terrorism is to prevent the fuckers getting into the UK. And to increase security on our own shores to root out all those perpetrators of evil that are already here.
Billions have been spent on illegal wars started by a former puppet of a American president George Bush. I see thousands of UK soldiers on the television fighting to make Iraqi and Afghanistan safer places. Yet I very rarely see police officers walking the streets of London. If you ask me there is something not quite right about that!

Damn….that is such a waste.
It sounds like all of the criminals have tested the cameras and are more informed than the average person as to their capabilities.
It is a sad world when you cannot even park your bike somewhere without fear of losing it.
They are going to need a lot more than updated cameras to get a grip on the crimes and violence that seems to be escalating everywhere these days.
Stiffer laws maybe…police officers that are actually paid for their job so that they take it a bit more seriously would be a good thing.
I think that we can all attest to the fact that people everywhere are becoming totally desensitized and could care a less about others.
Pleasant level of information here. There is so much data around about this subject matter that every now and then you cannot see the wood for the trees but you have pitched this at absolutely the appropriate level so that the lay person can comprehend – thank you!
