Camden Town Fake Goods Kingpin On The Run
An interesting article caught my eye in the local free Camden rag this week concerning a fake goods mastermind Mr Swee-Teong Chew. He failed to turn up at court to be given a 3 year prison sentence after being prosecuted by the Islington Trading Standards team, the sentence was subsequently handed out to him in his absence. I guess he could do the crime, but couldn’t do the time…silly man, had he never heard of the saying, if you cant do the time, don’t do the crime! Is that not the first thing they teach all budding criminals when they start out on the road to easy riches, if not it should be!
Mr Swee-Teong Chew who was born in Malaysia, was also linked to one of the biggest hauls of replica or if you prefer fakes goods ever seized in Camden, way back in 2006. He supposedly had an Aladdin’s cave full of merchandise including the usual suspects Gucci, Versace, Cartier and D&G…but, there always seems to be a but with this guy…but the Trading Standards case against him was brought to an abrupt halt, when they were informed that he had fled the country and all leads to trace him were exhausted. I wonder how hard they really tried to find him and let me guess his wife had told the authorities that he had fucked off back to Malaysia…the oldest trick in the book!
Fast forward a few years to May 2010 and Mr Swee-Teong Chew, finally gets caught again doing what he does best, which is making money from fake designer goods, in the neighbouring borough of Islington. What a joke…I have walked from Camden to Islington and not even broke sweat, it is that close. Un-fucking-believable and Camden Trading Standards couldn’t find him. Its seems that Chew hadn’t fled back home to the Far East, but was in fact just a few measly miles away. And they still couldn’t catch him.
This is the bit I find truly un-fucking-believable, he had already done a disappearing act in 2006 and finally 4 years later Islington Trading Standards done what Camden should have done and got his ass into court. He of course denied all the charges during his trial, just like crooks always do when they get caught… do they ever put their hands up and say yes I’m guilty as charged. What does the Judge then do, after he has been convicted and bearing in mind he has already done a disappearing act in the past as well as having been caught in the pocession of a forged passport…you guessed it, he was let out with a so called curfew order, which also required him to report to his local police station on a daily basis…that seems like a really smart thing to do!
It came as no surprise to anybody apart from the judge who let him out to await his sentencing hearing that Chew has disappeared into thin air again and yes you could have guessed what was going to happend next, he has fled the country…wasn’t that what he done the last time. Maybe the cops should try looking in Hampstead instead of believing his wife that he has fled back to Malaysia.
I personally find it crazy that given the circumstances of this case that they let him out to await his sentencing hearing, considering his track record. At the very least they should have made him wear one of those security ankle bracelets. If I was a betting man, I would wager a bet that it will only be a matter of time until Mr Swee-Teong Chew is back peddling his fake merchandise to those that wish they could afford the real thing!

The courts are incredibly naive in this country sometimes. Why was he free to roam around anyway? He was obviously a flight risk.
