Breaking Into The Museum Of London
I haven’t lost my mind and decided to enter a life of crime. I have no intention of breaking into the Museum of London. I thought I would get that out of the way real quick before the cops arrive and break down my front door, thinking they have caught me red handed! This is London and I have seen first hand how they can turn a peaceful protest into a riot, yes indeed! But alas that is another story!
Breaking Into The Museum Of London is an inspirational, pilot initiative that took place last year, which was undertaken by 14 young people from the North Kensington sixth form college in London that focussed on heritage, curating and creative video making. Just by chance whilst seeking my own inspiration on Youtube today I discovered the project. Better late than never!
The concept was a simple one, each of the 14 youngsters were each give the task of choosing an object in the museum’s collection that they found interesting, which they then would base a video around. All the teenagers were given expert instructions in handling the video camera, sound and in developing story ideas inspired by their chosen object
From what I can gather the project wasn’t something most of the teenagers were looking forward to. I think the word museum instantly filled most of them full of dread and boredom! They weren’t interested or didn’t care about history. I personally think the way kids get taught history in this country needs to be radically reformed! Again that is another story!
However the attitudes of the youngsters was altered once they started working on their individual projects and discovered that the subject of history doesn’t have to be as boring as their old school history teacher!
The various films created by the group formed a showreel of different perspectives of 400 years of London history. A diverse range subject matters and issues were delved into including race, class, political struggles, woman’s rights and even technology! Things that I guess have shaped all our destinies in some shape or form!
I wish I could feature all of the videos on London Is Cool, because they are really well put together, thought provoking and entraining. Hop over to Youtube and check out their channel!
