If you are a blogger, business person, student or in fact anybody that accesses the internet with your own laptop or pc, it is imperative that you protect yourself thoroughly. I have learned first hand how important it is to protect yourself from the criminally inclined.
Last week my laptop was attacked and infected with a variety of malware. It has been a quite a few years since I have had to deal with such shit. I guess I only have myself to blame for letting my guard down and not doing all I could to protect my system from such attacks.
If you don’t know what malware is, let me give you a wee insight. It is quite simply malicious software that some crook has designed to infect any computer it can find its way onto. Types of malware for example include Trojans, viruses, worms, malicious active content and many other such things. One simple piece of advice that I can give to every blogger and owner of a pc out there is that if your system ever gets infected with some piece of crap you need to deal with it asap.
In the blink of an eye, my laptop was infected with what is called a “Google redirect” Trojan horse and a couple of other viruses. What was basically happening was every time I used google to search for something I was directed to some bullshit sites. Such as cheap Viagra or Shemales banging your next door neighbour, I’m sure such web sites serve a purpose for some people, but I have better things to do with my time.
I wish companies like Microsoft, Google, Yahoo etc would spend a wee percentage of their billions of dollars making the world wide web a safer place. I suppose there is more chance of Tony Blair speaking the truth concerning the Iraq war and his eagerness to get this country into an illegal war than there is of those fucking companies spending some of their profits on something that doesn’t make them some juicy money.
I’m sure most of you can guess why the crooks, want to get a virus onto your pc. If not, here are the most common reasons:
As the saying goes money is the root of all evil and that is basically what those creators of all those amazing viruses are looking for. Is to make easy money. I just wish that they would turn their considerable talents to something more honest.
I must admit I enjoyed the challenge of getting rid of the infections that were on my laptop. The first thing to do when you get infected is to cut your access to the internet and whatever you do, never type in any passwords, for obvious reasons. Fortunately I have a spare laptop, which I used to get the correct information to clean my system.
An amazingly helpful site that I found, which made the process of sorting out my laptop fairly easy was Geeks To Go. I wish I had moved my lazy ass and made my computer like a fortress before I got infected, but sometimes we need to be taught a lesson the hard way.
A wee piece of advice to all my fellow bloggers our there in the blogosphere is to use proper protection. Geeks To Go, as well has helping to solve problems, offer great advice on how to protect your site from harm. The best thing that I like about that site was they speak in clear English, instead of computer talk…..
