Beautiful Words That Come From The Heart

Beautiful Words That Come From The Heart

I was wandering around Paddington Old Cemetery yesterday afternoon, enjoying the calmness and sanctuary, which this peaceful place provides. It really is a fantastic place, from which to escape the madness of city life. The best thing of all is that you never get any of London’s riff raff or crazies in there, well not that I have seen.

A gravestone caught my attention, or I should say it was the epitaph on a gravestone that reached out and touched me. The words were simple, beautiful and touching. It was a family grave, which held the mother, father and son.

The first one to die was the son who was only 21 years of age, when he entered his resting place. How the son died or what he died of I will never know.

I can imagine that any parents who have to suffer a death in the family that goes against the expected natural cycle of life and death, that it must be devastating.

The epitaph on the gravestone, were spoken as if they were from the son to the mother. When I read the words, they rang a very faint bell in my head but I couldn’t quite place them at the time. Thanks to Google I know they came from a poem called “New Year’s Eve” by Lord Alfred Tennyson.

There may have only been 24 words of an epitaph on the gravestone, but I can imagine they provided some comfort to the mother. Sometimes words can have an effect and help people to get through situations that they would rather not be facing. They are beautiful words written by a poetic genius that most certainly knows about the heartfelt pain of losing someone close.

If I can I’ll come again Mother

From out my resting place

And Be often, often with you

When you think I’m far away
