Baby On Board Give Up Your Seat

Baby On Board Give Up Your Seat

A few days ago, I walked past a woman at Paddington station with a badge on her t-shirt which simply said, ‘Baby On Board’, they have obviously been designed to let the public know she is pregnant and to take extra care of her, like don’t bump into her, give up your seat for her and carry her bags, maybe not carry her bags in London because some fucker would soon run off with them.

Do pregnant woman really need to wear badges on the London underground for people to give up their seat on a crowded train…quite probably. But then again do many people actually pay any attention to the badge. I personally give up my seat whether it is on the tube, bus or in any waiting room for all pregnant woman and old people, if I see them.

Something that I have noticed especially on the tubes is that most people seem rather reluctant to give up their seats. Many a time I have been standing and watched old people and pregnant woman standing next me and those seated suddenly fall asleep or become engrossed in the floor – lets just say they pretend not to  notice!

I often wonder how those seated would feel if their pregnant wife, sister or elderly mother or father was forced to stand on a packed train, whilst fit men and woman sat all around them…exactly! That’s life in modern day London for you. And you cant say it is a British problem, because those tubes are more often that not packed full of people from all over the world.

A few months ago, I was on the Bakerloo train not going anywhere in particular, as per usual, when I gave up my seat for an old woman. Just as I was standing up to give her my seat a woman of around 30 was ready to jump into it like a speeding bullet, I blocked her path and said it’s for the old lady. If looks could kill, I would have been dead!

I’m however not into this misguided notion of chivalry where a guy has to give up his seat for a lady…Lets be honest there aint many ladies kicking around nowadays. I watched a couple of young woman on a crowded train not so long ago who had their bags sitting on a chair while a dozen people stood around them…yes ladies indeed!

I know that everyone wants a seat on the tube, but sometimes we all have to be good human beings and show a bit of random kindness just for the hell of it. Does it really cause so much hardship for  able bodied men and woman to give up their seat and have have to stand for 10, 15, 20 minutes…I guess it is for some people!

  1. I really get what you mean here. I used to travel on the northern line from London Bridge to Barnet and some of the people I met really took the biscuit! I myself will get up for and elderly or pregnant person but somehow that doesn’t cross other people’s minds!

  2. I am 6 months pregnant and get the Overground home from Hampstead to Kew, No one gives me their seat anymore. In fact people have looked straight at me and still not offered their seat. One time when a seat became available a man in his thirties actually pushed me out of the way so he could sit down!! I have started to ask people in priority seats if I could have their seat however it is very embarrassing!!

  3. You are definetly right about not many ladies around lol and the girls that put there handbags on seats whilst other people are deprived of a seat. Thats London girls for you lol

  4. Some of them haven’t got a clue what manners are. I have noticed quite a few young guys give up there seats for old people, but never a young lady!
