Abracadabra and The Millennium Dome Became The O2

Abracadabra and The Millennium Dome Became The O2

I remember vividly all those years ago, all the publicity and of course lottery money that was wasted and abused on the infamous Millennium Dome. I remember thinking at the time how could something that basically looked like an oversized tent cost so much, would you believe that £603 million lottery money was wasted on this disaster of a project. I wonder how many sick, homeless or needy people could have been helped with all that money.

The Millennium Dome was meant to be Tony Blair’s and Cherries, I meant to say a New Labour achievement that would be revered all over the world, it would be a magnificent and world beating masterpiece that the nation would be proud of. Tony Blair’s exact words at the time were that the Dome would be, “a triumph of confidence over cynicism, boldness over blandness, excellence over mediocrity”.  In  fact the project  tured out to be the  opposite of everything Blair  claimed it would be. I don’t suppose it is any surprise that Blair got us into a never ending war started by the Yanks in the name of oil and greed, did I really say that I of course meant to say terrorism, honest.

I remember I had voted for Labour after all those dark years of Conservative rule under Thatcher and I had hoped that things would change for the better. I couldn’t believe that New Labour had lost its values somewhere along the line and weren’t that much better than the shit that was there before them. It is was the same wolf in power, it had just changed its name. In fact I have never voted since giving my vote to New Labour in 1977,  because it is my choice and I chose not too, that is what is called freedom of choice.

Lets get back to New Labours great vision, the Millennium Dome, which was the home of the so called  Millennium Experience from January 1st 2000 until December 31st 2000. It is a crazy world when you think about how much Lottery Money, was spent  on this. I’m sure loads of consultants, so called businessmen, and greedy politicians made plenty cash out of it from fees and backhanders.

Abracadabra and the Millennium Disaster became the 02 on May the 31st 2008 when it became an entertainment district. I bet Blair was glad to get this white elephant off New Labours hands, it was costing would you believe, over £1 million a month to maintain.

The O2 London is one of the biggest indoor entrainment districts in Europe and there are various, music venues, bars, restaurants, nightclub, cinema and exhibition spaces are now all housed within the big tent like structure. I have visited the O2 on a few occasions and find it a great place to hang out, it is has got good security and you don’t come across too much riff raff inside.

The O2 is of course home to the O2 Arena, which can accommodate 23,000 and is the most popular venue in the world. I recently heard an interview online with the Noel Gallagher, where he slated the sound quality at the O2 Arena as being a  joke. I have personally never been to the place. My days of wasting £60 to help feed the luxurious lifestyle of a pop star are well and truly over. However by doing a little bit of research online it seems that his comments maybe true.  Another big gripe that I have read about the arena is that it has been designed to herd as many  people as possible into the confines of as little  space  possible. Are concerts at the O2 arena a total waste of time and money or what?

I don’t know if the owners of the O2 are making a profit out of the place, but I would hazard a guess and say they sure aren’t blowing as much money as the Labour Party wasted on one of the biggest white elephants anywhere in the history of the world called the Millennium Dome. In fact the O2 may soon have some new owners Trinity College Cambridge!

Abracadabra I wish politicians would stop fiddling their expenses, taking backhanders and start trying to make the UK a better country to live in. I think I may be hoping for too much……….

  1. Not a Labour supporter I see. :p

When the Dome first came up, it was huge news back in Singapore and we had to ponder through the architecture and construction plans of the Dome for our engineering courses.

There was no news of it after it officially opened. Guess that’s for the econs students. lol.
