A Blast From The Past | The Wandering Scotsman In Barbados

During my many holidays in Barbados and my 9 months living there I developed a real taste for roasted breadfruit. And best of all where I was staying  we had a breadfruit tree in the garden, so all I had to do was reach up and grab one any time I was in need of  a wee treat. Just like I could do with limes, figs, and mangoes…oh how I miss just reaching up and grabbing a piece of fresh fruit.

Where I was living it was like a bit of building site. Half the house was getting renovated and the garden was not quite a proper garden. Which was good for when I wanted to roast some Breadfruit, because there was always some old pieces of wood kicking around to get a great blaze going.

I learned the art of roasting Breadfruit the Bajan way from family members, who were country folk who knew all about growing fruits and vegetables , rearing animals for the pot and cooking good food than any other people I have ever met in my life.

It didn’t take me long until I progressed onto roasting my own breadfruit without supervision! It is a fairly straight forward task – cover breadfruit in wood, create massive fire and after 15 minutes or so you have a gift from nature ready to be eaten. Once the breadfruit is roasted all you need is a sharp machete to bust it open, some margarine and pepper sauce to put on it and you have something that is quite simply delicious to eat. Such a simple dish to create…even I couldn’t fail with this one.

Maybe one of these days I will go buy myself a breadfruit and take it along to Hyde Park and make myself a wee fire….

  1. Breadfruit Yummy! This reminds me of Jamaica. The breadfruit would taste even better with ackee and saltfish. It only took 15 minutes to roast one? It takes a lot longer when we do it but our method is a little different.

  2. I should have said that it takes 15 minutes when I have a good blaze going, so I guess it is in the fire for perhaps 30 minutes altogether.

I have tried ackee and saltfish and I know how delicious it is. Maybe one of these days I will get the opportunity to try Jamaican style breadfruit.

  3. Mmm…breadfruit, been lucky enough to try it a few different styles when visiting family abroad, the best was roasted on the beach alongside a (gigantic!) barbecued fish in Tobago. Enjoyed this post…but now I wish I was on holiday…

  4. I have had breadfruit roasted on the beach with Kingfish steaks which came off the boat a few hours earlier….delicious!

And I could do with a wee holiday myself…
