39 Years Old Again And Trying To Get Into Shape Again

As I creep closer to 39 years of age, “what do you mean not again?” I’m back on my get fit regime. I need and want to get back to my peak condition of a couple of years ago when I was in awesome shape. All that pain and effort I use to put myself through kickboxing with the legendary Alex Wasinowicz and hitting the gym on a regular basis feels like a life time ago.

I have decided to slowly get myself back into shape. What I have been doing is going for a one hour power walk every morning and another one hour walk in the evening. I have also been incorporating some calisthenics into my daily routine.

I have to finally admit it to myself that even though I’m not overweight or anything and still kinda look in good shape, that looks can be deceiving sometimes. My attempts to get myself fit again have been tough going, a hell of lot tougher than I anticipated.

It was only 4 years ago that I walked up Ben Nevis and barley broke sweat, in fact I loved every second of it. Yet only a couple of months ago I felt some real pain and tiredness in my legs and knees when I climbed up a measly 311 stairs to get to the top of The Monument in London.

As I get older the energy that I had only a few years ago doesn’t seem to be there any more. But I’m hoping that now I’m back moving my lazy ass and doing some exercise again that I will soon be back in good shape and feeling like a fit young loon again.

This is my second attempt back on the get fit campaign, I damaged my back a couple of months ago overdoing things. I pushed things to far too soon doing some chin ups at the park and paid the price. A  lesson has been learned  and I have  decided to take the slow and gradual route to getting to where I want to be.

Just because we maybe get a wee bit older, it doesn’t mean we cant stay in good shape. Back home at the Spartan Club Gym in Aberdeen, where I trained for too many years to mention, there were guys in their 60’s and 70’s working out on a regular basis that would put me to shame at the moment.

When I’m power walking along the streets or at the park, I sometimes like to have some music blasting into my eardrums, especially when I need a extra spring in my step. I had forgotten that I had The Proclaimers on my MP3 player and it appeared just at the right time when I was thinking about sitting down on the park bench and taking things easy. What a blast from the past that tune was, I love it.

I never knew getting back into shape would be this tough, but that’s life and nothing that is worthwhile is ever easy. I’m going to get back into shape even if it kills me to get there, I’m only joking about the kill me statement! I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of pain, sweat and tears ahead of me as I turn back father time!
