10 Free Things You Should Do In London

London, London, London so good I said it three times. For the not so rich tourists that come to London, there is a wide choice of free things to do and places to visit. In fact I would recommend them for the richer tourists as well, because they are too good to miss out on.

In fact yesterdays article showed the more adventurous travellers how to holiday in the Big Smoke totally for free, How To Vacation For Free In London: For Broke Backpacker Types Only. I know that is taken things to an extreme, it sure as hell would be for me.

Because of my own personal financial circumstances, basically semi broke. You know how it goes, a costly divorce, half my life is stuck in another country and such like. As well as currently embarking upon a wee business enterprise, I haven’t got as much money to be as  extravagant as I would like to be. So I have especially enjoyed the free things that are on offer in London.

My list of 10 free things to do in London includes galleries, museums, Royal Parks, music and entertainment. There should be something for everyone, if not you are maybe the type of person that should just stay at god dam home.

10 Free Things You Should Do In London

1. The National Maritime Museum: One of my personal favourite museums in London, this place provides a fascinating glimpse into Britain’s relationship with the sea from the past to the present.  The National Maritime Museum is a place that the kids will even love.

2. The Regents Park: Quite possible my favourite Royal Park, a great place for wandering around in and taking things easy. The Regents Park is quite simply a must visit park.

3. River Thames Walk: For those that appreciate the joys of walking, I would recommend this wee stroll. Start off on the South Bank of the Thames and walk under Westminster Bridge and walk to Chelsea Bridge and come back via the North Bank.  A wee gem of a River Thames Walk.

4. Portobello Road Market: Portobello Road is a narrow, winding thoroughfare, in the middle of Notting Hill. A market has been held here since 1837, and today is really three or four markets rolled into one.

At the Notting Hill end there are over 2,000 stalls selling antiques, jewellery, paintings, coins, medals, silverware and collectables. All the stallholders here are experts so don’t expect too many bargains.

Further down the hill are fruit and vegetable stalls. The section around Westbourne Park Road and Talbot Road was made famous in the film ‘Notting Hill’ , which starred Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts.

Under the Westway is a large flea market offering second-hand clothes, jewellery, records and books, and beyond this at Golborne Road the market becomes rundown but it’s still worth searching for bargains.

5. Notting Hill Arts Club: Don’t let the name put you off, the Notting Hill Arts Club isn’t full of twats, it is a cool venue. Every Saturday afternoon from 4pm to 8pm Rough Trade hosts a showcase of live Indie type bands.

6. Jack the Ripper Walk: You may be thinking, oh no not another walk, but this isn’t just any old boring walk, this is a free self guided Jack the Ripper walk. Follow in the footsteps of London’s most famous serial killer. Get a free map here….

7. Primrose Hill: Why waste money on the London Eye, when you can get an amazing view of London from the top of Primrose Hill. The best thing of all it is more like a wee mound, than a hill, which takes all of 5 effortless minutes to climb.

8. British Museum: This place has a vast collection of over 7 million artefacts and objects from throughout the centuries. From all continents of the world, illustrating and documenting the story of human culture from the beginning to the present day. If you visit one museum in London, make it the British Museum.

9. Covent Garden Piazza: In the open Covent Garden Piazza virtually every day of the week come rain or shine, you will find a variety of musicians, jugglers, mime artists, variety acts and lunatics who will be doing there thing.

10. Greenwich Foot Tunnel: A pedestrian crossing under the River Thames is more fun than you think. The Greenwich Foot Tunnel is 50 feet under the River Thames and is 1,217 feet in length. It really is an amazing experience walking along the tunnel, which is glazed with over 200,000 thousand white tiles. The entrances are at Cutty Sark Gardens and Island Gardens, Isle of Dogs.

There we have it 10 free things to do in London for free, does any other city in the world offer as many quality things to do for free as are on offer in the Big Smoke?
